synthetic vs. conventional & time to change?

   as i'm getting the head redone on the '85, i was wondering if i 
should switch to synthetic oil as the head gasket will be replaced. is 
there any advantage to a fully synthetic oil that offsets the additional 
cost? i usually get to change the oil between 3k & 5k. the car will also 
be sporting a g-grind, ported intake with larger t-body, and a 4-2 
manifold. it will soon get a 4k trans as i plan to be using it for 
towing and some spirited driving. recommendations appreciated. thanx.
