How do most of you check spark?

I've got and 86 Jetta GLI that's giving me  some fits.  Had it running then bang it decides now it won't start. How do most of you check spark at the plugs?  One person unless I get one of my kids to turn it over.  I have a spark plug spark checker for plugs with the big ends, but the little threaded ones my tool doesn't work on.  Does anyone have something similar and if so where did you get it?

I've run some starter fluid to see if I could get it to fire, nothing. I've checked coil, dizzy and rotor button, wires and ICU wiring. I would like to confirm it is or is not getting spark at the plugs before I go any further, but I can't stand on the outside and crank it at the same time.
