OT: 24 - WTF???

Lots of precedence, what came to mind was another
show: NCIS, a spin off of JAG. (It's become so much
it's own show that I forget about it's origin most of
the time.) 

In a season ending cliff hanger...

[SPOILER]

they are tracking a reoccurring character who leads
them into a seemingly fatal ambush, only to have
everybody survive. _Then_ he pops the one female field
agent in the forehead from a sniper perch and
disappears. Man.

They replaced her with another female (Masad ringer)
and the show must go on...
