was tune-up routine? now Solid lifters

Clattering lifters.... What are you talking about?
If solid lifters make a clattering, there's something wrong.

None of my solid lifter engines, have ever needed any shim adjustments, or made noise.

Most the hydros, that I've owned, have had noisy lifters(cam followers), except for my 1.8L 16V PL in my '79 Scirocco, the 3A in my '83 GTI, and the 2 driveable 2L16V donors.

If I had a choice of using a 3A bottom end with a JH head, or a 3A hydro head. I'd go with the 3A head w/intake, to keep the larger intake ports of the 3A.

VW solid lifters seem to require NO maintenace, they last uber long, and they should be fairly quiet...
