90mm vs 100mm - that is the question

i, too, am confused about this. i have taken apart both 90mm and
100mm hub carriers and only show slight differences between the two.
despite the fact that they have different part numbers on the etka, the
only difference that i can find is that the 100mm carrier is slightly
deeper, in terms of the bearing hole depth. i am confused as to why this
would cause a problem if one were to install a 100mm axle into a 90mm
carrier as there would be more clearance. the hubs, themselves, are
exactly the same for 90mm and 100mm, as are the bearings.
