Thanks Mark, well it turned out to be a "dufus" problem (lack of attention, that is) .. I had labelled some wires with masking tape and a tiny bit of tape got lodged in one of the connector plugs, preventing #3 pin contact and evidently severely confusing the cluster circuits.  Cleaned it out and everything works fine.
