She said it's definately a 16v, and I really doubt this guy did a swap.
   
  Now he lives in Montana with his TDI Golf, but the scirocco is out here near us, in a garage.

He still has that?

AFAIK, there was *never* a 16v Scirocco w/ automatic. If
that truly is a 16v, it's extremely rare.
