Subject: Deal's off: Memphis '81 Scirocco

I've done something I don't think I've ever done before. I backed out of a
deal I made on a car.

I got the following e-mail over the weekend from another
lister:

> did you pick up this car yet? I am almost positive i know this car. It
> is rotted pretty bad in the rear. Also has a dead cylinder.
> Pretty sure it
> broke a valve. Email me back, i am interested to know how you make
> out.

This got my interest, so I e-mailed him back and got this:

>I am not near. I am in Pa. A friend of mine went to college with him.
>Pete was down here for a visit about a year ago. While here he and Ted
>got to talking about the car. Pete said Ted could have the car if he
>wanted it. So we pack up the car and headed for Tenn. We got there
>around 8PM, enough time to put the fresh Battery we brought in it and
>fire it up.
>It had a really
>bad miss, that we assumed was a ignition problem. The next day we
>investigated further and found that cylinder number 3 had no
>compression.
>The other three all had over 140 as I recall, which ruled out the head
>gasket. It was also burning a good bit of oil. The interior is typical
>plain jane, not id too bad condition as i recal. both rear wheel wells
>are rotted pretty bad, i am guessing the sun roof drains are not
>draining and are creating alot of moisture back there. it also has a
>good bit of rot down low around the muffler area. In the end we decided
>it was too far gone to make it worth towing home. So we packed up and
>headed back to Pa without it. When Pete was here he made it sound as if
>the car was really nice and it ran great, that is the only reason we
>were willing to drive for
>12 hours to go
>get it. I only replied because I didn't want to see you get burned
>because Pete misrepresented the car again. Let me know how it turns
>out.

This e-mail filled in some of the blanks that Pete had left out when talking
with him, which is too bad. (He did mention his old roomate etc.) Had the
car not had such serious engine problems OR there wasn't much rust in the
rear I still would have picked it up. But combine the two, and it becomes
"not worth it" to me for what I want it for.

Live and learn I guess. And thanks goes to Jason for saving me a weekend's
worth of time and a couple hundred bucks down the drain.
