I don't recall the Bistein rear shock diameter as being any bigger than the 
Konis. Bigger than crap Gabriels though!
In the front, as you point out, the shock has to fit into the stock strut 
housing. The piston rod though is truly massive! Has to be good for bending 
stiffness and camber stiffness. It seems almost as big as the shock body, 
but that shouldn't interfer with any spring selection.

Koni rear shock body diameter is right at 1.7"

Bilstiens are cheaper! Quite a bit cheaper. So I'm not sure that "settle" is 
the correct term ;^)
