Was Cooling system weirdness: NOW DEXCOOL SUCKS!

Having gone on this merry-go-round on the HD (read truck) side of things
there seems to be about 3 different fluids used for "conventional" coolant.
The long used green is ethylene glycol and people started changing from that
primarily for toxicity reasons. The red (pink, purple, fuscia or other
similar descriptive term) is less toxic, usually heavier duty and in its
most glorious state supplemented with SCA, a dose of molybdates and .... god
I wish I could remember in the wee hours past midnight. In any case they are
there to prevent cavitation on the surface of diesel engine cylinders.
Dexcool and its HD cousin from Cat are what is called Organic Acid
Technology, OAT for short and while they work just fine in their intended
victims, excuse me, engines, I wouldn't try feeding them to fine german
machinery. We get along fine at work with the Havoline Super Duper HD pink
juice and we have GM and Cat in our fleet. As to the rest of the rainbow of
colors, my own cynical suspicion is they are there so some conniving soul
can charge us more for a "universal" coolant, friendly to all coolants on
this and any other planets we happen to conquer. The thing to check is the
ASTM number, there are some that are oriented to gas (spark) engines and
some toward diesel(compression), kinda the same as oils. Check an owner
manual type of thing to sort out which is which or maybe the very clever can
decipher engineerese.
To Daun and all the Yeaglys, thanks again for a fine time and all
your hospitality. To the rest in attendance, thanks for the comradery and
education I am exposed to at this get together. I'll lean on Alex to see if
we can't show up with two Sciroccos next year.
        Andy
