scirocco weight

I have heard, so this is strictly hearsay, that the change to the space saver spare changed the floor pan design and the net result added weight.  There may have been other reasons to change or reinforce the pan however; the end result added weight.  I was told this by an SCCA rules junkie, he said that is why the 83 Wolfs burg is a desirable car since it is the lowest weight MKII, 4k trans and big valve 1.8l in it?s stock configuration.  Again, only rumor, hearsay, etc.
