Rebuilding 2L block

Okay I'm statring to see the need special tools for replacing seals,
etc...  Checking for clearances and everything cleaned and dried.  I
don't have an air compressor.  I was going to get the block hot tanked
anyways should I just have the machine shop disassemble and reassemble
the short block?  What has everyone else done?
