8v valve adjustment question

Hey all- question for you.  

I have never done a valve adjustment and, well need to
do one now. I dont have the special tool to depress
the cam followers (or what ever they are called) I
tried last night with a screwdriver but did not want
to f-up my head- 

Is there a way to depress them with out this special
tool?
