[OT] '83 GTI w/3A 2L Long-block - Fuel Problems

The seal for the hatch at the top is an O ring, and if it's not seated
right, you'll get a stronger gas smell inside the car than out, and a fuel
waterfall over the top of the tank if you overfill it. A leak at the fuel
lines on the top of the tank will also give fumes which are stronger
inside the car than outside. A leak at the tank seam will give fumes more
strongly when at about 3/4 tank/ or during those wonderful long sweeping
curves we all are so fond of, and you may see stains around the axle area.
Other options for smells are the filler neck, and the rubber hose which
attaches it to the tank, the latter showing a fairly visible leak. The
dealer can do a smoke test to see if the tank or filler neck is at fault.
If it's either of the first two, you may be able to see leakage if you
lift the little round cover under the back seat (using your handy Phillips
driver) as you drive/ fill the car.

Now you may wonder how it is I know all this. I own a Scirocco. I even
found a colour which more correctly describes it than "Arctic Blue
Metallic", that being "Hellblau".

Cathy, now smelling fuel from the OTHER one...
just when I thought the huffing was over too.
