Drove a Syncro Vanagon over the weekend..

My personal VWs in our family's VW farm are: 1 ea. '88 Scirocco 16V 2.0l and
1 ea. '86 Syncro Westfalia.

They are both fun, on opposite ends of the spectrum. Guess which one is the
money hog? Clue: only 8 valves...

On the other hand, I doubt any Scirocco could survive, much less succeed,
climbing the Stairsteps in the Hollister, CA off-road park!
http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=1179 Every year in early May,
we have the Syncro de Mayo there. Oh, what fun it is putting to shame many
other Manly 4WD machines, with our quaint little boxes, some of which have
stoves and upper deck sleeping!

My daily commute is made a lot more enjoyable behind the wheel of Buzzbomb,
the one with lotsa valves. Sigh...

And I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Don (the fella I work for on the weekends) had an 86 (IIRC) Vanagon Syncro,
180K on the clock, some rust, it was evidentally from up north... There is
an intermittent hic-up with it. It will cut-out occassionally for no reason
we could find... Shook the wiring, relay, brain, grounds, on and on, we
could not get it to duplicate it while idling. However, it would
occassionally pop-up while driving... SO, Don wanted me to drive the thing
hard up and down his gravel road... So, I ran it through it's paces. That
is a lot of fun! Ice would be more so. The neat thing is when doing a turn
around, it almost feels like it has 4-wheel steering. Fish tails are
difficult to produce, but fun when doing so...

Not that anyone here would be interested, but the reason why the owner was
searching for the problem is because he is going to sell it... I think he
is asking 2.5K, which may be a bit high with its present problems... Couple
of small wrinkles, brown in color, very clean interior. A nice van, and a
bodyman's dream (rust again)...

I thought I would share some VW joy, I am not feeling it here on our local
club website...

Cheers,
  David

PS-- Do 'good' and 'Monday' really go together?
