If you stopped there, you'd have a mess.  Now...if you cut a section out of the beam and replaced that section with a bearing..a bearing that would allow one side of the beam to rotate independently of the other, whilst still maintaining Y and Z axis location...But that would just about eliminate roll stiffness, which would have to be made up with a huge sway bar and then you'd be right back where you started.

  I've talked to a couple people that do Pro-sedan racing in Scirocco's
  and they said the hot set up is just cutting the beam in half. I haven't
  seen it and don't know the details, but it just might be crazy enough to
  work.
