overheating..SOLUTIONS TO THIS P.I.T.A.

Also, with the t-stat removed the coolant flows too fast through the
radiator to properly cool (at city speeds anyways). The car will
actually run hotter when you drive hard around town without a t-stat.

This is based on my actual experience. The 80 S I bought from Kervin
had strange temp issues - it would take forever to warm up, but when
driven hard it would get warmer than any other Scirocco I've owned -
unless you're on the highway where it would run cooler than normal.
As winter approached I had almost zero heat coming out of the heater
when I drove faster than 40 mph. Sitting in a traffic jam though, the
needle would be way up there.

When I started to investigate I discovered there was no thermostat
installed (not Kervin's fault - the previous owner must have done that).
I installed a low temp t-stat from Adirondack and with no other changes
it ran COMPLETELY normal.

The cooling system was obviously designed to run with a restriction (the
t-stat) to operate efficiently. I agree with David here - it's dumb to
run without one...

BTW, I've never drilled holes in my t-stats, but I've never had any
burping issues. I fill from both the rad and the upper rad hose. Run
it for 5-10 minutes, then top up the coolant... I guess it can't hurt
though, as long as the hole is tiny...

Mark.
