When you need to justify the cost of that new tool to your SO, just 
calculate the savings you'll  get by doing the work yourself.
(Of course, since you will be buying your parts with at least some 
discount, you'll save even more.)

There is an online database called Auto Repair Reference Center (ARRC). You 
may be able to get FREE access through your local library (or any library 
that subscribes and will give you a library card).  (via something called 
EBSCO Host)  http://aarc.epnet.com

Has other auto repair info also.
