16V/MkII stuff (not so muahahaha)

I'd think plugs or cap & rotor first. Cheap enough solutions, quick to check
as well.

Subject: 16V/MkII stuff (not so muahahaha)

Okay, so this is the one I need feedback/ suggestions on. And I haven't
checked some of the basics yet (timing/compression), cause I don't have
the equipment, but will probably head over to my brother's to do that
shortly.

here's the car:
1987 16V,low miles 2L, recently rebuilt 1.8 head (like 30 000kms on the
rebuild) Euro intake cam, Euro intake, TT exhaust with cat, CIS-E, let's
call it "the classic" build.
What's been replaced/cleaned up etc:
plugs, air and fuel filter, cap and rotor, coil, all main grounds, vaccuum
lines .
plug/coil wires check out within spec
main fuel pump and accumulator are quite new
fuel tank just done on recall, filler neck and hose to it are new/intact
last time I checked the metering plate it pulled up easily with a magnet

The car starts with a mere flick of the key, and idles smoothly. It runs
fine, but has lost somewhere between 1/2 to a full second in the quarter
mile. I think the basics must be okay since the car runs well other than
it has slowed down.

It seems to have lost something between 4500 and redline, it just doesn't
pull like it should, and this car has the peaks bumped up in the rpms due
to the cam and intake, it used to scream at high rpms. (133hp to the
wheels last dyno)

Possible candidates?
Clogged cat is what I'm leaning towards, since the car ran very rich for a
while. Plus power seems to change with the sound of the exhaust, loud
being slow. Plugs looked good this time around though, so I think the mix
is fine. (why would it change anyway?) I couldn't get the exhaust apart
last night with ordinary force. I didn't heat it since the car still
stinks of fuel, so is there any suggestion on how to get it apart without
destroying the pipes? (It's a TT exhaust with the cat). I could take it to
a shop but they won't gut the cat for me anyways if that's what needs
doing.

I hate to think of clutch, (Centreforce dual friction) but I guess it
could give similar symptoms. There is no idication of it slipping badly,
as has been the case with the ones we've toasted, but it is in the same
rpm range that power went missing. This has been a great clutch so far,
two years of abuse.

Fuelling? Not sure why this would have changed at all, and the pump's
quite new.

So what do you think. No suggestions to donate the car from the cheap
seats, thanks.

Oh, and the continuing saga of the fuel stink. The car still smells, and
mainly in the passenger compartement. I'm thinkng the o ring on the top of
the tank still isn't seated, but will entertain other suggestions. (I'm
gonna overfill it after the weekend) It's worst at 3/4 tank or so. I'm
real sick of this issue, it's been going on way too long. I thought the
new tank would cure it, but this is the headache after all. And the fumes
are giving me one.

Anyway, I'm overall happy with the car, but this is bugging me. I'm
secretly wondering if my 8V could beat it, and that's just wrong.
