8V / MkI update (muahahaha)

Just a little update on what I've been up to, I'm splitting it into two
posts so the various camps can delete as they see fit. But they are BOTH
very much on topic. I probably should stretch them out over the year and
intersperse them with my social commentary, but nah...

So, I have this awesome Hummingbird green car that is running really well,
Klaus, he's a 79. And what did I let the evil forces coerce me into a few
weeks back?? Why, an "extensive cam swap" of course. I told my husband I
was off to Drew's for a "new cam", a G grind, which technically I got.

But it came "wrapped" in this:
-JH with 10:1 pistons and fresh head rebuild/G grind (on loan)
(That's more compression, breathing and displacment than the California
1.6 that came out...muahahaha)
-"big" throttle body
- Fox intake manifold
- FF gearbox swapped for a 4K

What he still needs: exhaust upgrade, and to get rid of the points/add
knock sensor ignition. That will make him even more awesome.

So many thanks to "Mr. Tech Procedure" for the time that went into the
rebuild and install, much of the good stuff had come from Carrots before
she went diesel. I'm glad it's done, since I seem to have these 2L/16V
blocks dropping on me of late. This relieves the temptation to build
another MkI 16V, for now anyways. I mean, I already have a 16V. May as
well play with it eh?
Driving impressions?

Well, the "kid" doesn't even want to bother, he says,"8V? Yawn". His loss.
My husband on the other hand has been in the car, and can't believe how
big a difference a cam can make. (hehe, I'm so cruel) I'm waiting for him
to figure it out. This is a great build for the car, it just flies, and
the smile lingers long after I'm back on land. I'm liking it a lot. Like a
REAL lot.
So you 8Vers may have a convert, though I'll always enjoy both cars. This
one will get the nod for the long hauls now I suspect.

The problem was? Well, the whole "no stopping" thing. The brakes had been
bled at Cincy, and had gone soft again, so I managed my first attempt at
drum brakes, including wheel cylinders. Working slowly on the first side
and with a lot of phone interruptions (ahem) I actually didn't die on the
test drive, but I did have a lot of fun!!!! (Those tall 13" tires have
gotta go though)

Anyway, what do you think of the build? Sounds like too much fun eh? It is.

One more thing. Proof from Waterfest that my assertion of the New Beetle
being the Scirocco IV is correct. I go to tech in with the bug, and the
guy says "#53 eh?" I'm like, what? This isn't a type 53? No, he says,
"it's the new Love Bug, Herbie's number was 53". Coincidence??? I think
not...stick that in your pipes and smoke it.

And to those who think this list isn't about love for these cars, get lost
eh?
