Stand Alone Fuel / Ignition Management Benefits

I think there is a benefit in that you loose the intake restriction of the CIS metering plate and
the relatively torturous intake path associated with the CIS unit.
I was reading an article recently in Race Engine Technology comparing the effect of bends in the
intake runners of racing engines. Obviously we don't have racing engines, but the effect was
surprisingly large and when you look at our intake systems with CIS I don't think you could have
more bends and kinks.
The other bit of data I have is that my engine dynoed at 132 HP with Haltech (assuming any engine
management will give the same power gains). I have a friend with an engine very similar to mine,
except he has CIS, that was able to make the same power, but his engine was in a higher state of
tune to do so. i.e. he had a 280 cam vs. my 274, he had headers vs. my TT dual downpipe etc.etc.
The part not to be forgotten when you ditch CIS and go to aftermarket engine management is that the
CIS is wonderfully accommodating! Any cam, any cam timing, bump your displacement from 1.8 to 2.0,
open up your exhaust, etc..... CIS accommodates the change in fueling requirements.
After market engine management will not. All of these changes will require you to revise your
fueling map. So, you can't just plug in a map from a similar engine. You need to tune it to get
maximum power. So, if you can't tune it right or don't tune it right you may see a power loss!
Well, that's what I think.
