Block Rebuilding/Prep Questions

It really all depends on the condition of it as it stands. Assuming it has
100-150k miles on it like most engines on that age, you'll want to look at
these from a parts standpoint.

Absolute Must:
- Block gasket set

Really Should Replace:
- rings
- main and rod bearings

Probably Should Replace:
- Rod bolts
- Oil pump

Now, as far as how you treat the block again depends on the condition. If it
were me, I'd take it to machine shop and get it tanked and the bores
de-glazed at a minimum (assuming the bores are suitable and the shop will
restore the cross-hatching). If the bores are f*cked, you'll have to upgrade
to bigger pistons - generally $700+ - and that's before the boring that the
shop will charge you. Getting the moving parts balanced is always money well
spent too, just not totally necessary....YMMV though...

HTH and G/L,

Jeff

Subject: Block Rebuilding/Prep Questions

> First quick preface to my questions. I've been absent from the list for a
little while, and a couple of months ago, I was rear ended by some girl in a
camry at about 40mph, and my scirocco was totalled. I kept the car from the
insurance company, and it will eventually end up as a parts donor for my
next scirocco (hopefully a MK1!)

> Anyway, I picked up a free 9A block today from a guy who lives around the
corner. I want to rebuild the block, to be used in my next scirocco, but
I'm new at block rebuilding. I can't really spend a fortune, so here's my
questions...

etc.)

process, that don't cost a fortune and/or are worth spending the money on?

later. Thanks for all the help and input!
