What are VW brake drums made from?

Wondering if they are steel or cast iron. I would like to weld something
onto one, but if they
are cast iron that would be waste of time with the mig welder. And before
anyone asks, no
I am not repairing one or anything like that. It's for something other
than being mounted on the
car.
