Need help!

I could really use some advice on my Scirocco.  Here is the story. 
 
I recently replaced the starter in my 1981 Scirocco S. I thought all was
well and took her out for a test spin when she broke again. I was moving
good until all the sudden it seemed only a third of the gas I was
sending to the engine was getting there. I would have to push down the
accelerator about three times as far as usual to even move. When I got
the car home I had to turn the idle way up just to get it started and
keep it running. It smelled like gas just sitting there idleing. I did a
quick once over and only noticed one thing that looked out of place. I
am a terrible trouble shooter but good at fixing the problem if I can
find out what it is. I am inclosing two pictures. The first is of the
whole engine bay so you all can get your bearings as to where the second
detail picture is. Any help would be appreciated. If I can not fix it
soon the wife is ready to throw it away.
