Scirocco Cold Air Intake

Both Ebay and Vortex will lead you to believe adapting the Volvo 240 lower
airbox is a "performance" mod-- Fact is, the Scirocco 16V airbox flows better.
The stock S16V box has a 3" intake--- while the Volvo unit is 2.5"...

If you are concerned about the pre-heat valve as a restriction-- an Audi 5000
dual intake snorkel will "snap" DIRECTLY onto the S16V intake-- bypassing the
pre-heat -- providing maximum airflow AND as a bonus-- a "factory" look...
(Even has molded in holes as "suction breaks"). FWIW--Audi built it as an ENGINE
intake-- unlike your typical dryer hose manufacturer... I live in the RAINY
PacNW-- seven years and no hydro lock...

I did about 8 hours of dyno testing at Techtonics last summer, testing
various 16V cam combinations. As a sideline to the cam tests, I also did dynos of my
engine WITH and WITHOUT a (dirty) Amsoil plate filter. The results from back
to back runs were nearly identical. My best runs were around 150whp with a
"street" build 16V-- (those used to "Vortex HP" won't be too impressed until you
consider that Techtonics was "only" able to coax 209hp @8000 out of a full on
and competitive ITB VWMS 16V Rally kit car on the SAME dyno-- "Shetland" dynos
peg this same engine over 270whp)

This leads me to believe: A) The stock plate airfilter does NOT restrict
airflow such that a P-Flow "cone" would be an improvement.

further

B) The 3" inlet of the Scirocco 16V stock airbox has more flow potential than
the (smaller) Volvo lower.

Some (seven year old) pics of the Audi snorkel mated to the S16V lower airbox
can be found on The Bad Habit Rabbit site--

Hopefully, this hasn't entirely killed my chances at finding the "good" parts
at the wreckers---
