Normally, if it is just while turning, it should be the outer.  Does it do it on acceleration, or deceleration (hard)?  If so, in that case it should be the inner...  Almost regardless of when it choses to make the noise, if you are turning, it should be the outer one...  I would recommend a complete shaft, either new or rebuilt, as they are pretty cheap anymore...  75.00 rebuilt, or up to 125.00 new depending on your location...
