Cooling Question



At idle my 16V gets a hot upper rad hose but the loser one from(to) the
water pump stays cool.  I waited untill the temp gauge went just barley past
the led.  I am using the simpler MK1 rad with the rad cap and no expansion
bottle, if that makes a diff.
Did I not wait long enough (hot enough) for the thermostat to open?  Not
sure which hoses should get hot in which order as the engine goes form cold
to "hot enough to open the thermostat".   I should just under stand the flow
of water in that system better too I guess.    Any advice?
