balancing. / Shot peening my rods?

Grinding (to remove stress risers) is different from shot peening (done to introduce a compressed surface, thereby reducing chance of crack initiation), done for these different reasons.
With low hp engines (such as the VW 8v), it's hardly necessary, but it won't hurt!

Ok so if a grind them smooth (the sides of my rods) i dont really need to
shot peen? Hmmm maybe a wont bother anyway then. Just figured lighter rods
are easier on everything as well.

I wouldn't bother with shot peening unless you plan on making more than
  300hp.

Yeah i just have stock pistion (1mm overbore though), ARP head studes,
  ARP
conrod bolts. Crank, is shaved done .25MM. I was thinking of grinding
  the
rods a little bit like they show in the performance VW book. Then you
  need
to shot peen it. I was just wondering if i can shot peen with me
  sandblaster
cabinet. Do i need too just buy shot peen pellets? If so where can i
  find
them. I tried princess auto but they didnt carry anything like that. Any
  ideas anyone?
