Burping an engine?

It works.
Remember: a SMALL hole!
.062" dia or so is all it takes...

Really drill a hole in your thermostat to help this probkem? I am rebuilding
an engine, and well be refilling the system in the near future. So i will do
this if it seems to work.....

Yeah.. you missed that VW cooling systems are a huge headache!

But seriously.. all you can do preventatively is fill the radiator and the
block through the upper rad hose (sounds like you did that) and drill a
hole in your thermostat to help purge trapped air.

Now that you've already filled with water and coolant you might want to
try a third method that doesn't require you to drain and refill. It does
assume, however, that there is air trapped in your upper radiator hose.
You can tell that there is if it's all poofy and when you squeeze it, it
  fights back.

Heat the car up until it almost boils over, then kill it and pop the
hood. With a pair of channel locks carefully compress the upper rad hose
spring clamp and squeeze the bloated hose with your other hand. You should
be able to bend it just right so that a small spray of hot air and a
little steam comes out (no water!) from around the lip of the hose. Keep
doing this (3-4 times if you have a lot of air) until air no longer comes
out. Then do a couple heating and cooling cycles to let the rest of the
air work its way out naturally.

Check your progress by heating the car up and feeling for relatively
uniform temperature across the radiator. If one side is ice cold, you've
still got trapped air (or a different problem).

  Enjoy.
