OBD1 & OBD2

Any recommended software/hardware to read OBDII codes (VW/Audi)?

they are basically levels of complexity (and emission control) of the engine
controller. OBD2 is just the newer system (96ish and up). OBD compliance
means the system will do a specific minimum to attempt to maintain proper
emission management.
