Sudden Stall-HELP

Here we are ready to bring the newly painted 82 home tonight when we 
run into a slight problem. Had to boost the car to get it going and it 
would run fine for a minute...then suddenly quit. It seems that while 
we are boosting, or having the battery connected  the other cat she 
runs fine.  When we took the car to the shop, it ran great but would 
not start  when we attempted to move it. I hate electrical problems, 
but I need confirmation that the problem is battery/charging system 
related.
Will the car not run at all with a  dead battery? I mean REAL dead. 
Does not seem to even hold a charge. We boosted and let the battery 
charge from the donor battery for 10 minutes. the car would run fine 
for about 2 minutes then quit again. Now we are stuck in some damn 
parking lot across  town. No way of testing the charging system 
as...well the insides have no gauge cluster install as of yet (interior 
to be finished)
