what's the deal with making 16v rear seats fit into a mk1 again?

You gotta drill some holes to do it.  The mk1 latch is totally different, has this hook that goes backwards into the trunk under those flat side panels on each side of the trunk cover.  Where, a mk2 has more of a door post sticking out the side with the door type latch mechanism in the seatback.  Also, the mk2 seats have a "foot" in the middle that needs to be bolted to the floor.

So, you've got to cut holes in the rear side cardboard and sheet metal, and put a couple of screws into the floor (careful of your gas tank!!!!).  However, if you do it right, it looks great and works perfectly.  Nice thing is, the "pins" at the bottom corner of the seat tops center the seat perfectly so you can judge where to cut the holes and such.

Can anyone refresh my memory?  I know the latch on top part is different - is there any sway to swap from one to another? TIA, JT
