once it fires, does it start?  if you find yourself cranking endlessley for nothing, and then seemingly out of nowhere it starts, it may be your ignition switch.  try wiggling the key.  and about the CSI, it is triggered by the thermo-time switch on top of the cylinder head coolant flange.  and if your engine is warm, it shouldn't go off as you stated.

Personally, now that I thought about it this may not be the case. It didn't 
start hard in the morning or after the trip to the event site for the first 
run. But it was really hard to start after sitting for about an hour when I 
got back and needed to move it to get my cutlass out.
