hard gas pedal

the gas pedal on my '87 rocco is getting really hard to push. i'm guessing
it's got something to do with the throttle cable. do throttle cables start
to bind with age? is there a way to "lube" them or do i just need to replace
it? the linkage on the tb seems to move fine, so i'm pretty sure it's the
cable.
