more dasher bearing ?'s--assembly

just got the poly inserts for my dasher strut bearings, just in time for the 
suspension overhaul this weekend. for those of you with them: is there 
supposed to be a gap between the bearing and the top cover plate? pix for 
illustration:

bearing parts that i have. the gap is between the gold bearing and the black 
cap on the left. note how pretty everything looks after some paint.

closeup. hopefully you can see the distance between the bearing and the 
white lip. with the cap installed, there's a gap of about 1/4" between the 
bottom of the cap and the bearing, which doesn't seem right.

as always, any help is appreciated.
