Oil around #1 plug

I've got some oil around my #1 plug.  Noticed it last night, but didn't have time to check into it.  The engine is running very strong at the moment.  The mileage on the head and on the block are not really know to me.  I was told that the block had 60,000 miles on it and the head lived on the track.  I've got a little oil consumption, about a quart in 5,000 if I drive easy.  About a quart every 2500mile of stop and go and full throttle redline driving (my usual style).  I guess the first step is a compression check, but I just wanted to know what you guys thought it might be.
