This stuff is the bomb, I have a can of it here for when I catch
people smoking in the house.

Besides something like this there are specific products you should
search for that react with the smelly substance and break it down
chemically. 

Another thing to consider is to make a baking soda solution and dowse
the carpet with it, shop vac it up after a good soak and another dose
of clear water n' vac.

Those free newspapers make for a good initial soaker-upper, then air
dry.
