Tie rod end prob!! HELP!!?

Ok, I bought a new tierod end for the roc on sat. I got the old one out of 
the spindel and could not get it off of the rod. The final option from my 
Mech friend was groove the end and then unscrew it. Ok, I can handel that. I 
got there this morning and cut a nice groove. The end spun but it was not 
threaded!!?? It was ribbed not like splines but actual RIBS and it didn't 
loosen at all. Do I actually have to replace the whole rod in this case? Or 
is there something else I can do?
