I knew weight was the reason, I just wasn't sure on the expansion thing. I
wouldn't put it past auto makers to make a lighter, more efficient engine
that wore out a lot quicker due to expansion and contraction, hence the
question.

alloys and cast iron. That characteristic is accounted for when they design
for aluminum. Aluminum blocks are becoming more popular for one reason;
weight.
(And vehicle weight is the major player in the quest for greater
mileage)

Speaking of engine metal, why are most engines aluminum now? Doesn't
aluminum expand and contract a lot under heat/cold? Wouldn't that really
stress out parts and stuff?
