OT but A1 - Changing Main Seal

It's actually fairly straight forward and if you can pull a motor and trans
then you can replace the seals. You can use a screwdriver (large) to pry
the rear main out making sure not to scratch the crank (you can even pry on
the end of the crank as long as you smooth out any marks you make) but a
seal remover is reccomended. Install by lubing the seal (on the inside
only, the part that touches the crank) with something that is not petroleum
based that will break down rubber like sil glide or something synthetic).
Line up the seal around the crank and use a tiny flat tip screwdriver to
make sure the lips of the seal go around the crank (we're talkin' cars
here!!) being careful not to damage it (the lube helps here) then just tap
it in. The trans main shaft seal is easier to put in but harder to take
out. What I do is use a decent sized wood screw (about 5 in long) and srew
it into the metal edge of the seal making sure not to damage the main shaft
or the seal mounting surface. Once you get a good grip on the seal attach a
pair of vice grips and tap it out with a small hammer. Works nicely and
quickly every time. IF your going to go through all of this before you
install it into your truck you may want to look into replacing the T/O
bearing, the clutch push rod, the push rod bushing and the push rod seal.
HTH!!
