VW's next Scirocco?

I've been waiting for the Elise to come to the states for two years (should
be here next year). It's an awesome driver's car.  A two-seater disappeared
from my immediate future now that there's a kid pending, but 2007 might be
about right.  If VW can keep the weight down, eliminate the passive-driver,
weighty goo-gahs (cup holders, seat warmers, rain sensing wipers, etc.),
maintain VW durability, and make it a driver's car, I'd buy one.  It seems
strange that they'd produce this though, since they wanted to take VW up
market as the luxury marque and make Audi the sporty marque.  Hopefully, I'm
wrong and this car's coming.
