WTF? #!?@ tranny leak

i've had this intermittent tranny leak since i bought this car last year.  
it will go weeks/months without a problem, then just decide to puke out some 
gear oil, then be fine again after that.  last time it did it, about 1 mo 
ago, i finally found that the leak was (almost) definitely coming from the 
speedo hole (i thought a more likely culprit was the vent or the gear 
selecter seal, but no).  this makes no sense to me. this is the highest part 
of the tranny, why would it have a sometimes leak there? i figured my tranny 
might have been overfilled; it still may be, since i guess the oil should 
only be at the lower level of the fill hole (i always use the speedo hole). 
i think it may still be a bit higher than that. very strange. not a little 
leak either. big puddle on the driveway. any ideas, has this happened to 
anyone else? btw, i cleaned everything on that cable/tranny, and tightened 
it good. is there an o-ring or seal or something i can replace? even if 
there is, i don't understand this leak. oh, and it bears no relation to 
driving hard or anything. usually the leak is when i leave it sitting for a 
few days. but otherwise, there isn't even a hint of a leak.
