intermitent oil light?

I just got my car back from my parents place and the oil light keeps poping 
on. my father said he was driving it for a while and it was doing it 
sometimes he didn't think anything of it. So when i got it i changed the oil 
and started fixing some other things on it but not the oil light is on all 
the time. i don't really know what to do about it, cuz if it was the oil 
pump and it has been bad all this time the engine would have blown up a long 
time ago. so i am guessing its the sensor but i don't really know what to do 
about it. any ideas?
