Megasquirt, was Re: mother of all hotrod links...

Julie:
I've built 4 Megasquirts and installed and tuned one. (one belongs to a
friend, two earmarked for my 16V)
The one that is installed and tuned is in my nephew's 87 Jetta that has been
converted to an ABA.
The ABA has solenoid injectors, all the sensors and a nice little engine
wiring harness. So, in this case, installing the Megasquirt is as simple as
wiring it for power and wiring it to the engine wiring harness. (well, it's
a little more complicated than that, but still butt simple)
Installing it on a 16V isn't a lot more difficult. Solenoid injectors, fuel
rail, TB with TPS and air and coolant sensors all need to be installed and
wired. Not rocket science!
The Megasquirt itself is really a neat little unit. It's fuel only, but I
think the stock 16V ks ignition is pretty good and doesn't need to be
replaced. The MS software is based on an 8 X 8 load vs. RPM matrix (same
size as the TEC II VE correction table!) and has all the usual enrichments,
starting, cold running, accel pump, EGO correction.....
The huge plus is it is really easy to tune. I spent months on my Haltech.
Getting my nephew's car to a 90% complete level (and this using only a
narrow band O2) took about 45 minutes.
Support is awesome through the yahoo group. There are a bunch of guys that
are really interested in this stuff and have written all sorts of support
code and variations on the basic running code such as dual table code (I
think Wing is running this, one table for fuel and one table for water
injection), high resolution code, and a whole lot of other stuff that is
really beyond my interest....
I've gotten responses in 5 minutes! to posts on the yahoo group. Haltech
support is pathetic in comparison.
Cheap, great support, easy to build and tune and enough sophistication to
produce the power, driveability and economy of factory EFI.
just my .02
Dan
