CV joint noise?

I'm getting a light knocking noise while driving. I thought it was the right
outer CV joint, so I changed it for a 1 year old joint (10K miles, no noise
problem before) off a spare driveshaft, but the noise came back after a few
miles. Symptoms are:

Noise is there under acceleration and deceleration, in neutral, clutch in or
out.

Noise increases on right turns, but is still there when going straight
ahead.

Noise stops if the brakes are applied - even if I feather the brakes with my
left foot.

With the car jacked up, there is about 1/4" - 3/8" of free play at the
circumference of the tyre before I see the drive flange move. The other side
appears to have neglible play. I checked the brakes as well and the anti
rattle clips are all there & nothing seems to be loose.
