hub centric?

rhys,
    hubcentric is where the wheel centers itself on the hub. it has nothing to
do with using wheel studs/lugs. stock vw wheels are hubcentric (naturally), as
they fit snugly over the hub flange with very little play. most aftermarket
wheels need centering rings in order to be hubcentric on a vw. as for your
wheels, if there is a gap, and you have no ring to fill it, you are currently
running non-hubcentric. you can minimize the offset by centering the wheel as
much as possible while mounting it.
    the problems from this can be as simple as wheel vibrations (even if they
are balanced) and steering wheel shutter (if they are misaligned in the front).
in the worst case you could break wheel studs (they are supposed to hold the
wheel up against the hub, not prevent it from sliding across the hub, which
could happen if not hubcentric). wheel lugs can handle alot of tensile (pulling)
stress, but too much shear (side-to-side) stress will break them.
