I believe that car has a turbo buick V6 (LC2). I have a short, although
crappy, video clip of it at an auto-x.

Subject: Re: 16V Scirocco AWD???

found on Yahoo:
Found a trace of a hill-climbing V6 AWD 'rocco in VT. Also like 5 other
Scirocco's competeing in this event. Anyway, another post on our list
says this car might have an Audi 5000 engine running ~250-300hp. Read
first paragraph - maybe you can contact this guy:
http://www.sccv.org/html/November%20Final.pdf
In July of '86 Car & Driver Reported:
"What will tell the tale, though, is the hardware, and the first course
has just been served: the VW Quantum Syncro wagon. "Syncro" is VW's name
for 4wd, and most of its car lines will get the treatment. The badge has
already shown up on the venerable Vanagon (C/D, February). The Golf will
benefit from Syncro-ization in about a year, and an all-new 4wd Scirocco
will appear soon thereafter."
They were wrong. :(
