JH 8v knocks when cold

<P>An excellent method for isolating the bad&nbsp;rod/wristpin is to pull the plug wires off on at a time until the&nbsp;offending noise&nbsp;changes or stops. It's probably a good idea to pull the wires with the engine off and lightly set them back on the plugs&nbsp;&nbsp;before start-up.</P>

<DIV></DIV>Knock, wrist pins/piston slap. ticking, lifters/oil pump. i doubt that it is an oil pump. usually this exhibits itself when the engine is warm.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;The knock is just the sound really, it doesn't shake the engine.
<DIV></DIV>&gt;It's not very loud, but definately audible. Maybe my pump is going
<DIV></DIV>&gt;bad? I thought I had my winter oil set-up pretty good; Mobil-1 full
<DIV></DIV>&gt;synthetic 10w-30 and a NAPA Gold oil filter. If this indicates that
<DIV></DIV>&gt;my wrist pins are going bad or something, I'm going to cry-

<DIV></DIV>&gt;saying is that the clattering of valves on a cold engine is normal
<DIV></DIV>&gt;until the oil comes up to the top (your engine is not hydraulic
<DIV></DIV>&gt;valves) yes, but are we talking about KNOCK that shakes the engine,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;then no.. which is it?

<DIV></DIV>&gt;OK so you're telling me my cold morning knock is normal I hope? I'm
<DIV></DIV>&gt;just very anal since I built this engine myself, and in my case that
<DIV></DIV>&gt;does not make me rest easy:)

<DIV></DIV>&gt;questions, do you have a block heater or oil pan heater on this girl
<DIV></DIV>&gt;?
<DIV></DIV>&gt;if not it could be the bearing of the valves complaining for the oil
<DIV></DIV>&gt;is take
<DIV></DIV>&gt;its time to get there., an oil pan heater or block heater will keep
<DIV></DIV>&gt;the oil
<DIV></DIV>&gt;ay 70'f and will reduce the "cold morning knock" in my humble
<DIV></DIV>&gt;experiences
<DIV></DIV>&gt;with Canadian 8 months out of the year.

<DIV></DIV>&gt;Hey all,
<DIV></DIV>&gt;now that temps are dipping well below 20F here, I have noticed in
<DIV></DIV>&gt;the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;morning when I start up my '84(stock 1.8 JH with 8k on rebuild), it
<DIV></DIV>&gt;sounds
<DIV></DIV>&gt;as though it is knocking. Not like an insane erratic knock, but a
<DIV></DIV>&gt;constant
<DIV></DIV>&gt;knock-knock-knock-knock, well you get the idea. What's going on? The
<DIV></DIV>&gt;sound
<DIV></DIV>&gt;goes away once warm. I'm running Mobil-1 synthetic 10w-30 if that
<DIV></DIV>&gt;has
<DIV></DIV>&gt;anything to do with anything. Thanks to any who can provide even the
<DIV></DIV>&gt;slightest info/help on this-
