shift linkage adjusment

Someone help me out and tell me..there was a post a month or two ago on a
trick to keep the shift finger and the lockout plate exactly 15mm apart.
(5-speed) I guess I could figure out a shim and clamp type of thing but
someone had a nice elegant system to do this.
The trick is to keep it still, tighten the shift rod down and then measure
it and find that it must have moved.  Start over again....
