mid-engined Scirocco

I would venture to guess it's from an air-cooled vdub or porsche, judging by
the clutch release arm and shifter location.  Most likely with a Kennedy
Engineering adapter plate to allow use with the watercooled engine, and if
it's from a rear-engined car it has a flipped ring and pinion.

Possibly Fox stuff, but it seems like if that tranny were in a Fox it would
push the engine too far forward in relation to the wheels (judging by where
the cv shaft is)
